Remote use of libguestfs
by Richard W.M. Jones
[Stefan asked an interesting question on IRC about how / whether it is
possible to use libguestfs remotely. The answer is too detailed for IRC]
Consider this model of the libguestfs architecture[i]:
(2) libguestfs (3) Linux
(1) API protocol syscalls
program <--------> libguestfs <--------> qemu <--------> devices
guestfsd disk images
kernel
There are three places where you might want to use libguestfs
remotely.
You can remote libguestfs at (3). For example if your disk is located
remotely and made available to the local machine using iSCSI, it
appears as /dev/sdX and you can just access that directly with
libguestfs. Another possibility is to use the NBD or http drivers
built into qemu. Another possibility is to use sshfs (which we
already advocate for access to VMware ESX VMFS[ii]).
One user has successfully remoted libguestfs at (1), but it depends on
the programming language you are using. He used rpyc[iii] to
automatically generate Python stubs for libguestfs plus a remote
daemon. Same is probably possible in Java using (eg) RMI. It's
obviously a lot more complicated if you just consider the C API.
The interesting case is (2), and I believe it's also possible to
remote libguestfs here. In libguestfs 1.10 we added support for
accessing live guests. The way this works under the hood is that
instead of launching the qemu backend, you tell libguestfs to connect
to an existing Unix domain socket. To access a live guest, the idea
is that this is set up to point to a virtio-serial channel into the
running guest. But you could use the same underlying API[iv] to
connect to a remote qemu that you run yourself. You could start the
remote qemu using (eg.) ssh and have it forward the virtio-serial
channel back to something on the local side (nc -U?). Additionally
you would have to work out how to send the appliance over to the
remote side and/or arrange that there's a compatible appliance and
qemu available to run remotely.
As a final note, I should add that libguestfs will have different
performance characteristics depending on which remote method you use.
The reason is that some functionality exists only in the library
(eg. setting and getting various flags), some functionality runs
mainly in the library but makes lots of calls over the protocol
(eg. the core inspection API), and some functionality happens almost
entirely in guestfsd.
Rich.

Are you compiling from source?
In the standard build, libtool puts the libguestfs_jni.so* files in
"java/.libs" so you would use:
java -Djava.library.path=.libs t/GuestFS005Load
(See java/run-java/tests)
The jar file should be built in the java/ directory. However you
don't need it when running the tests because the JVM can find the
separate *.class files it needs from the current directory.

I guess the (non-obvious) thing you're missing is that we can't use
installed configuration files, because the sysadmin may have changed
them. We need the original of all files, and we get those from the
*.debs.
In the special case (and only in this special case) where we are
building on the Debian builders, there's no sysadmin and so no one
could have modified any configuration or other files.
However there may still be other problems I haven't seen. How to get
the list of files in each package (should be OK: dpkg -L). How to
resolve the dependencies so we know we have all packages / files?
With the Fedora builders, we have the *.rpm files left around and we
use them. Is that not the same in the Debian case?

Still a bug AFAIK.
In Fedora we build module-init-tools from source and we don't do
anything special[1] to get insmod.static, so I'm not sure why it
doesn't exist on Debian too.

Hope you can get something worked out. Let me know if you need any
more help.
libguestfs is legendarily hard to build ...

How to run the java demo code contained in libguestfs package ???
by 毛宏
Hi all,
I would like to use libguestfs to manage the virtual disk images of virtual machines on XenServer, which is a virtualization platform.
When I try to do some test of the Java codes contained in the libguestfs package, the following error promped up:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no guestfs_jni in java.library.path
at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibrary(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.Runtime.loadLibrary0(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.System.loadLibrary(Unknown Source)
at com.redhat.et.libguestfs.GuestFS.<clinit>(GuestFS.java:44)
at test.GuestFS005Load.main(GuestFS005Load.java:27)
It seems that I need to build guestfs_jni before I could use libguestfs through Java. But I am not clear how to get this "guestfs_jni".......
Does anybody know how to fix this problem? Thank you very very much!

You may need to add #include directives for the following .h files.
#include "error.h"
#include "filevercmp.h"
#include "fts_.h"
#include "full-write.h"
#include "hash-pjw.h"
#include "hash.h"
#include "xalloc.h"

You may need to use the following Makefile variables when linking.
Use them in <program>_LDADD when linking a program, or
in <library>_a_LDFLAGS or <library>_la_LDFLAGS when linking a library.
$(LTLIBINTL) when linking with libtool, $(LIBINTL) otherwise
Don't forget to
- add "lib/Makefile" to AC_CONFIG_FILES in ./configure.ac,
- mention "lib" in SUBDIRS in Makefile.am,
- mention "-I m4" in ACLOCAL_AMFLAGS in Makefile.am,
- mention "m4/gnulib-cache.m4" in EXTRA_DIST in Makefile.am,
- invoke gl_EARLY in ./configure.ac, right after AC_PROG_CC,
- invoke gl_INIT in ./configure.ac.

You may need to add #include directives for the following .h files.
#include "error.h"
#include "filevercmp.h"
#include "fts_.h"
#include "full-write.h"
#include "hash-pjw.h"
#include "hash.h"
#include "xalloc.h"
#include "xstrtol.h"
#include "xvasprintf.h"
You may need to use the following Makefile variables when linking.
Use them in <program>_LDADD when linking a program, or
in <library>_a_LDFLAGS or <library>_la_LDFLAGS when linking a library.
$(LTLIBINTL) when linking with libtool, $(LIBINTL) otherwise
Don't forget to
- add "lib/Makefile" to AC_CONFIG_FILES in ./configure.ac,
- mention "lib" in SUBDIRS in Makefile.am,
- mention "-I m4" in ACLOCAL_AMFLAGS in Makefile.am,
- mention "m4/gnulib-cache.m4" in EXTRA_DIST in Makefile.am,
- invoke gl_EARLY in ./configure.ac, right after AC_PROG_CC,
- invoke gl_INIT in ./configure.ac.
