I've nearly converted the Perl code for inspection into C, but while I'm fixing the bugs, it strikes me that the 'file_architecture' part of this is simple and self-contained. This is just a translation of the Perl call into C. The Perl call continues to exist, but is marked as deprecated. Probably we should simply replace it with a call to the new API.
