Hi,
While trying to ./configure libguestfs on gentoo fails since it requires
feboostrap or deboostrap
Can this be made optional and not as necessary requirement, since there
are still many useful uses for libguestfs
besides bootstrapping, which can be used on distros like gentoo.

Looks like debootstrap failing. Try by
hand:
mkdir /tmp/test ; cd /tmp/test ; debootstrap --verbose lenny .
http://ftp.debian.org/debian
and see if you get the same error. If so, debootstrap is a shell script
so running it as "sh -x debootstrap ..." might give some more
information what's going wrong. Looks as if there's missing some prefix
before $(TARGET)/dists/lenny/Release.

No actually fakechroot is installed , this is what the libguestfs
installation process does.

You need to figure
out why debirf thinks you're running as uid 0. Either
you're really doing so or you're running with fakeroot already. You
should do neither of those and it will work:

I'm running as root , but to be more precise I'm running this
from gentoo emerge/ebuild process which setups proper
sandbox to avoid system damage.

I have not been following this conversation previously, so
I apologize if this has already been mentioned. Guido's patch
also removes the smallyes pipe, which could be the culprit if
dpkg (or a subprocess called by dpkg) wants a tty on stdin.
Does Guido's patch still "solve" the problem if it's written:

"$@")
+ smallyes '' | chroot $TARGET dpkg --force-depends --install $(debfor
"$@")
or alternatively, does this work as well as Guido's patch:

AFAICT i'm the only one who's trying to install libguestfs on gentoo :)
And not all debian related software is well tested and does not work out
of the box like on native debian system - also I had to create and
install several missing
ebuild packages in gentoo.

Looks like bash glitches...
Another thing to note (and which seems to be source of the problem) is
that debootstrap with --variant=fakechroot does not find any additional
base dependencies, while
with --variant=minbase|buildd it does and works correctly!!!
for example with -variant=minbase it finds:
