This happens also with the current code, right?
In theory it would, yes. In practice it doesn't happen, but that's
apparently because the bug is non-deterministic in a way that it
doesn't fail in the current exact test case. But if we changed the
test in some undetermined but innocuous way then it might appear at
any time.
