[PATCH v2] launch: add support for autodetection of appliance image format

This feature allows you to use different image formats for the fixed
appliance. The raw format is used by default.

Virtualbox vdi Input Format and man pages

Hi,
I am new to v2v/libguestfs.
I need to convert a 30 GB virtual machine running Windows7 64 bit (a guest on a Linux system) from Virtualbox vdi format to qcow2 (or raw/img--another debate in itself) so I can use libvirt/qemu/kvm to run it and completely migrate away from Virtualbox.
The vdi machine is a mission critical production environment and I cannot afford to mess it up, etc. Will keep original vdi intact until have successfully converted and tested.
I have done some research and come upon v2v which seems to be just what the doctor ordered except that, in "local" man pages of version 1.36.4 which I have installed, there is NO mention of vdi compatibility as input format.
However, on these online man pages <https://linux.die.net/man/1/virt-v2v> I see a section called "Local VirtualBox guests" which seems to indicate that vdi is indeed accepted as input format.
Can anyone provide feedback as to the above?
v2v seems to be a tool I could use to more easily deal with this conversion/migration than just using qemu-img convert and having to then deal with the other bits and pieces such as virtio drivers, etc.
Thanks for any helpful feedback and pointers.

[PATCH] build: improve and simplify distro detection

Add a --with-distro=ID argument for configure, so it is possible to
manually specify the distro to use for the packages (in case os-release
does not provide ID=.., or the ID is not recognized yet).
In the case when --with-distro is not set, keep doing the autodetection,
but using os-release only, i.e. dropping the checks for all the other
-release files -- since there is --with-distro, older distros with no
os-release can still be used.

Using libguestfs to sandbox VM builds

Hi
Debian has a couple of tools like fai-diskimage and vmdebootstrap, to
build VM images, but they require being root, as these loopmounts
partitions on which deboostrap is executed. Maybe installing grub2 needs
access to block devices too.
I was thinking of using libguestfs to sandbox those processes, by
passing a build VM as a disk image and my build directory as a 9pfs
mount to the appliance, and calling the build command via $g->shell().
Any pitfalls I should be aware while doing this ?

nbdkit 1.1.15 -- test-python failure

Hi,
when I tested building nbdkit 1.1.15 in a current Debian chroot, I ran
into the following test failure. A repeated build went fine through the
tests and so far I have not been able to reproduce it with the previous
version.
The failing build was done using a clean Debian/sid, amd64 chroot
spawned by sbuild.

builder: Fix parallel builds of index-parse.o.
there is a small chance that a build may go wrong with the described
symtom, missing "do_parse" symbol.
It just happened to me on Debian's ppc64el buildd[1] and I could not
reproduce the issue on a ppc64el porterbox -- the whole build worked
just fine.
