care that much about which kernel the host machine

It apparently doesn't affect the earlier releases of Ubuntu, or not so
far as I have seen. The BIOS doesn't affect the running of Linux, but
it can affect the initial location of PCI BARs which is enough to
break assumptions made by the Linux virtio driver.
